As todays EQ Blog was about to go to press a 3.5 Richters Earthquake came in at Ridgecrest, California 29 Miles East of Monterrey, California so I'll continue on with todays EQ Blog and have an update on that one in my next edition unless something major shakes before then!

In other big earthquake news today. . . . . There were a lot of new big earthquakes covering the map today! I thought the biggest news was the Peru Earthquake that now follows this even bigger one that struck very near Vanuatu:

Spent some time on Monday looking over the snowfall amounts and came up with a small town in California by the name of "Lone Pine" and am currently now wondering if that might be where the big one hits! Last big one there was about a 7.9 not too far from Mammoth Lakes and felt in San Diego, Sacramento, and did a lot of damage in Inyo County, California! Watch California Region For Up To 9.1 Richters Major Earthquake!!! Could Strike Near San Francisco!!! Could Strike Near Los Angeles!!! Could Strike Lonely Desert Regions, Too!!!

Water In California Reservoirs=Good News, Right? And Lakes, Rivers, Streams, Lake Mead, Too? And a 2.5 Richters Earthquake Strikes Banning, California!!! Start Watching California For 9.1 Richters, Now!!!

UPDATE: Filling Reservoirs traditionally HAS been pretty much found to be to blame for some Major Earthquakes!!! Sichuan, China among the biggest at over 200.000 dead!!! COULD California be next??? Now Todays previously written EQ Blog:

I thought of this today, it depends on how EMPTY those reservoirs around California were before all that water FILLED THEM UP!!! And you could say probably some lakes, rivers, streams, and etc., too! Haven't heard how Lake Mead is doing, but there, too! So, point today mostly being you might have heard me relate the very serious concern that a Major Earthquake could follow all the excitement with the weather around California and I also notice shaking around Seattle, too, so maybe we should also think about the Big Cascadia Earthquake, too!!! Although I haven't yet really placed a big magnitude on 27 feet of snow and reservoirs filling up. . . but we should probably keep in mind it could go as big as 9 Richters for around California, Cascadia, Seattle Region or maybe Nevada, too! Although not sure if this 2.5 Banning Earthquake has too much to do with it:

Some shaking in California, but of course they say even the biggest of Major Shakers are not always preceded by foreshocks. Just because they APPEAR to be doing so in Peru where we're watching now for an 8, California COULD still shake as big as 9 Richters and maybe with NO foreshocks! You have to beleive everything you hear along those lines, though! For now start watching California, Cascadia, Seattle and Nevada for as big as about 9.1 on the Richters Scale!!! EQ Guy

8 Richters Earthquake Struck Papua New Guinea on Saturday!!! That's Probably Now Headed For Peru!!! Or California/West Coast??? East Coast Is Shaking, Too!!! Watch BOTH Coast's, Now!!!

Just have to add West Coast out of the fact that there does right now appear to be like 8 Richters of Major Earthquake Energy crossing Pacific Tectonic Plate!!! There's California and our West Coast right there situated along that far eastern edge of that very same tectonic plate and it just so happens to be looking like this will probably cross and then strike here!!! Generally I like to just say because it was an 8 Richters THERE. . . it will probably be an 8 Richters HERE!!! Most likely much closer to Peru where I'm expecting it to strike, but must watch around here just the same you know. Checked around and for right now let's go with the snowfall total for Mammoth Lakes, California and that is around 27 feet of snow!!! Total I'm sure for like this winter season and it says it's by far a record there!!! For our purposes right this moment and unless somebody comes up with a more scientific procedure for calculating like we're doing. . . then let's just go with 27 feet and assume Tahoe has a lot of snow like that, too!!! Lots of snow might come to equal big earthquake, just saying, so in the mean time I had been wondering if this could be the pressure on Hayward Fault we've been watching for? Although the foot of those mountains where all this is going on lies further up past Sacramento more towards the foothills there, not all the way out to San Francisco Bay unless some layer of like bedrock or whatever reaches the Bay. Then this could be what we've been watching for and it could mean the next Major San Francisco Earthquake might strike San Francisco Bay in the coming days!!! Watch For that one!!! All the shaking on the East Coast. . .could always mean something for them, too, so watch both places!!! EQ Guy

In the event that we do have time for Avalanche "Earthquake Minute" I'll have one more eulogy for Jim Berkland but here's a heads up! The exact moment of that months full moon was October 14, 1989 at 1:33pm and the earthquake was on October 17, 1989 at 5:04pm Pacific or 3 days, 3 hours, 31 minutes after that moment. Not enough to warrant my own alert, but that range does still have some effect on fault lines and at least somewhat agrees with my saying "The more full; the more pull" and have to credit it with Jims today very accurate prediction!!!

While there had been a landfall of a big Cyclone at India on December 11, I had written that alert out for UAE, Samoa, and Peru. . . but pretty much in every other way it still remains a big alert for all the usual places around that shaky Indian Ocean Tectonic Plate as this brand new big list from Italy will show you. Reletive certinty there's one coming, but we do at least know for sure there's one heading directly for them!!! A check revealed that it was originally TWO alerts for Peru with that first one now looking at Day 40 being on January 20! That day, or looks like Friday will also be Day 26 on the second alert so one or both of these could start happening right now! Probably why Italy is shaking, too! 3.9 Richters Just a Few Miles From Lima, Peru!!! Big Alert Continues For Peru, But Always A Chance Big One Could Strike At Any Time There!!!!!

Looking at my sheet with those dates there on and I see January 15 was Day 21 after landfall of Super Typhoon Nock-Ten at Philippines. So we are now looking at Day 31 coming up on January 25. . . but this Major Earthquake, that I'm now saying 7.6 to 8 Richters for, could strike there at ANYTIME!!! And take a look at the 3.9 very near there and I'll have to wait a day to run the felt report because this one shook late in the day on Tuesday and so I'll have all that tomorrow! So, the Anniversary of the Northridge Earthquake was on Tuesday!!! And I just Noticed it after I posted Tuesdays EQ Blog there!!! That was also the date when I had been doing a lot of acting in a lot of movies. . . and more or less decided right then and there to instead begin looking into the hows-abouts of earthquakes!!! Jim Berkland’s life here ended quietly early Friday morning, July 22, only a few days before his 86th birthday. He had spent most of his life in the Valley of the Moon, and he knew and loved our valley deeply, just as he was known and loved by many.

Throughout his childhood, Jim fished the streams and wandered the hills near Glen Ellen, learning the nature of the landscape. An avid writer, he wrote over a thousand poems about the wildlife and plant life of the area – and about the daily life of the people of our community. Because his poetry celebrated every aspect of the region, Jim was recently named Honorary Poet Laureate of the Valley of the Moon.

The boyhood naturalist grew to become a dedicated scientist, who believed in direct observation and critical thinking – despite conventional wisdom. His eager curiosity, combined with a generous and agile mind, led to discoveries that redefined the geologic prehistory of our region – finding fossils of sea life high in the Mayacamas range, and Ponderosa Pines (usually found high in the Sierras) in the lowlands of Nuns Canyon. Just this past year he found extremely rare tektites, fused remnants of a meteor impact, at Morton’s Warm Springs.

After receiving his degree in Geology at U.C. Berkeley, and serving as assistant professor at Appalachian State University in North Carolina, Jim returned to California in 1973 to become the first county geologist for Santa Clara County. Here he began to formulate some very original ideas about the nature and frequency of earthquakes.

His research was largely ignored, until his prediction of the destructive Loma Prieta earthquake appeared in the newspaper four days before it struck on Oct. 17, 1989. But he was promptly put on leave from his position as county geologist, for fear that his predictions could cause panic.

Jim was reinstated in his geologist position, though under restrictions. He continued to pursue his pioneering work in seismic prediction (he preferred the word “preparedness”), which remained both respected and controversial.

Though he had several California addresses and did some world travelling, the Valley of the Moon remained Jim’s beloved home. He adored his family – wife Jan, son Jay, daughter Krista, son-in-law Bill, and grandkids Kara and Jace – who regularly received his poems of deep affection. Jim also loved his community; over the decades he was active in our volunteer fire department, the community church, the Lions Club, the Jack London Foundation, and the Glen Ellen Historical Society. He happily struck up conversations with strangers. He readily shared laughter or gentle tears when he told stories about his experiences of life and the world that so fascinated him.

Toward the end of his life, Jim developed a deep interest in the world beyond. He was baptized through the Glen Ellen Community Church, where he remained a dedicated member until his death.

BIG One struck in the middle of the Island of Sumatra, I think that's the name of that island) and as of this writing Banda Aceh has not showed up on the list, there are some of about the same distance from the epicenter that would indicate it must have been felt in Banda Aceh. In fact Kuala Lumpur is equal distance and had more than one felt report from there which follows the list of nearby places also interesting there:

Have to mention this now because we're watching for the WORST to happen there in California!!! With big snows in the mountains and tons of rain across all of Northern California not to mention the fact that they've been taken off the drought list for the north, there. . . now it goes without saying that anything can happen there!!! These are not the normal conditions and all of my usual methods for watching earthquake energy travel goes WAY BEYOND all that right now!!! Therefore when I just now noticed a 2.8 at Monterrey, California it occurred to me there is a "California Mission" up there that at one time was heavilly damaged by an earthquake and earthquakes just do not strike up there around that region all too often! Kingston, Jamaica Earthquake of January 14, 1907 at 6.5 Richters With 1000 Deaths WAS Preceded By Lots of December/January SNOW!!! Here's The Story!!!

Well, I found a whole lot of proof they had lots of snow in the Sierras prior to the January 14, 1907 Jamaica Earthquake:

On January 5, 1907, two miners were trapped in the mountains east of Gardnerville, Nevada, in an abandoned cabin where they had taken refuge from the snowy gales. Chris Jepperson and Jack Reynolds had floundered helplessly in 15-foot drifts, and now they were stranded at an isolated mine. After three days snowbound without food, the men turned to their one possible savior--Jepperson's cocker spaniel. They tied a message around its neck, offered a few encouraging words, and forced the dog out into the drifts to die or reach the town of Gardnerville, about 20 miles away. The heroic canine struggled into town three days later, and then it wandered around for two more days before someone noticed the emergency plea for help. Rescuers trailed the exhausted canine back into the mountains where they found Jepperson and Reynolds unconscious, but still alive.

Exact Moment of the Full Moon will now be around 3am Pacific, 5am Central Time, althouggh probably now be past by the time most of you are reading this. . . but the Full Moon WINDOW won't be past and actually continues into Friday. Of course that 24 hour period would continue into the early morning hours of Friday, but as usual let's add a few hours to that for extra measure and just say mid-day on Friday for what all the effects of that added pull of the Full Moon could do there! I have to now add that intense amounts of snow are being reported up in the Sierras of California/Nevada, but a quick check on those other years with similar big snowfalls in that region did not produce any earthquakes to speak of. So, while they are showing amounts of over a hundred inches, the year 1959 had 189 inches and no earthquake followed. Must note that I have 884 inches reported in 1907, and also a 6.5 Kingston, Jamaica Earthquake on January 14, 1907 but as of press time I do not have all the exact dates on the snowfall and 884 was the total for the entire year! I'll update that info, though, for sure!!! EQ Guy

Big 7.3 Richters Earthquake Struck Near The Philippines!!! 2.1 Strikes Near Laguna Niguel, Laguna Hills, Laguna Beach, and Laguna Woods!!! And Would You LOOK at That Full Moon Overhead!!!

The depth of this big offshore Philippines Earthquake that shook in the early hours of Tuesday our time, turned out to have been hundreds of miles deep and thus reported to not be cause of any tsunami nor damage although felt reports seem to have come in from Darwin, Australia, and Singapore along with many from Malasia and of course Philippines including Mindanao:

It Rains In California!!! Also Anniversaries of Big California Earthquakes!!! And Full Moon Window This Week, Too!!!!! Also Watch Peru, Too!!!

Big question today is how much rain is California getting and how much will it take with all due respect for the fact that they've been in a drought, how much rain before a Big Earthquake is the result? It has pretty much become at best accepted science that this much rain will ususally bring with it some kind of earthquake. . . but are we watching for like a 5.8 or 5.9 Richters? Is it only still somewhat of a longshot they could get another 6.5 such as the two anniversaries we're looking at today, January 9 the day of the Eureka 2010 Earthqukae or the upcoming anniversary of the Northridge Earthquake on January 17 or next Tuesday? All that is right now happening along with an upcoming Full Moon Window that will be starting like on Wednesday this week!!! Looks like there is almosts certain to be some Major Shaking and am sorry to say it looks like this could mean CALIFORNIA!!!

Keep watching Peru because some of these have been getting rather close to being the big one we're watching for there and we're also starting to know more, and more about how foreshocks work in that region, too!!!

I noticed that Monday will be the anniversary of the "Eureka 2010 Earthquake" and so I went that one more step and looked this one up! Los Angeles Earthquake Struck on Monday!!! And Then The 7.2 Fiji Earthquake Struck Although It Was Downgraded To a 6.9 Richters Earthquake Along The Way on Tuesday!!!

I could very easily go all the way back through the information involving all the shaking at Fiji and locate the one that originally said it was a 7.2! Among those would probably be the message that came directly to my phone along with practically ALL of the ones on this list with the big one, now a 6.9 at the start of the list reading up:

Yet Another Big Shaker In Chile and in fact there were even more than just this one here! It's now followed by the updated felt report there, too:

And can't forget we were also watching Bangladesh and Burma, although a quick check revealed January 3 to have been about the last day of this alert! Here's what's shaking around that region:

Doesn't mention the fact that it's only about 10 miles from the border with Bangladesh, but it might also be the end of both that big alert. . . and the shaking in that region until further notice which could be until the next big one, or it could have something to do with that new alert for Andaman-Nicobar Islands and it could be affecting the tectonic plate boundary up at Bangladesh-Burma, too! 5.9 Richters Earthquake Strikes Northern Peru!!! Big One Could Strike There at Any Moment, Too, Although Predictions There are For January 9, and February 9. 2017!!!

The felt report from this 5.9 Peru Earthquake is pretty much all the small towns in Peru there with the exception of one or two that came in from Ecuador just to the north along with at least one felt report from all the way South in Lima, Peru!!!

And although we were watching Peru for a Major Earthquake and actually still ARE watching Peru for a Major Earthquake, we might need to get used to shakers such as this 5.9 continuing due to the fact that Ecuador got many, many what we now know to have been "Foreshocks" and so now possible earthquakes such as Mondays 5.9 might just continue until a big one strikes! While I've listed dates such as January 9 for Peru. . . watch because this could strike at any moment!!!!!

This is not the same Hawthorne, Nevada location as all the other shaking that took place there last week. This location is NORTH of Hawthorne and you might recall the other location where tons of shaking has taken place and is still actually getting some shaking, is to the South of Hawthorne and actually a lot closer to the line with California. Here's a 3.8 that struck there on January 2, 2017, notice it says North Northeast of Hawthorne, Nevada now:

So, as these exotic desert locations continue to shake, it's occurring to me that the experts are leaning towards these all being what you might call "Garden Variety" Earthquakes up there around Hawthorne and out around the Brawley and Salton Sea Region, too! Of course you know me and all my regular readers already pretty much know I don't so much follow those accepted science folks and so maybe we should keep watching around California for something more to shake. . . and I suppose mostly remember my theory about December and January Earthquakes and as long as it's still now January and the anniversary of Eureka 2010 and Northridge are both coming, keep watching there!!! Several Big Earthquakes Now Striking at Brawley, California!!! And Happy New Years 2017, Too!!!

It looks to me like at some point throughout the day on New Years Eve Day, a lot of the shaking that's been going on up there in the Cal-Nev Region might have now "Migrated" South to the region around the Salton Sea and the town of Brawley there! So far 200+ Earthquakes have now been striking at that Southern California Region!!!
