6.1 Richters Far Western Alaska Islands Region Struck There Late Sunday Night!!! Although Felt Reports Actually Came In From Anchorage, Too!!! AND One That Struck DURING a "Rose Bowl Game" One January 1st to Mention!!!

Checked on the exact time this one rang my phone and it was 9:47pm Sunday Night, so quite late even by Alaska Time, or 6:47pm Anchorage Time and surely a ways beyond Sunset there and easy to say past dark. . . only being a few days past their "Shortest Day" you know! And although over a thousand miles to the more populated regions, seems to have still been felt there as the felt reports that follow show:

6.1 - 116km SE of Cold Bay, Alaska
2018-12-31 02:35:37 54.428°N 161.472°W 26.9 km depth

Nearby Places
49.6 Miles W. of Pauloff Harbor, Alaska
633.3 Miles NE of Anchorage, Alaska, USA
646.3 Miles NE of Eagle River, Alaska, USA
654.5 Miles NE of Knik-Fairview, Alaska, USA
1017.2 Miles NW of Anadyr, Chukotka, Russia

And here's the felt report from the 6.1 late Sunday. Notice distance to all the usual places such as Anchorage at over 1000 Miles to the East of this epicenter:

6.1 - 116km SE of Cold Bay, Alaska
2018-12-31 02:35:37 54.428°N 161.472°W 26.9 km depth

At first this one looked like it could be the big one for that region where the underwater volcano/tsunami recently struck Indonesia. . . but upon checking the epicenter isn't quite that far south! Although originally billed as "Far South of Sumatra Island", this one is further south than Banda Aceh, but not quite south to the Northern Tip of Java Island, either, which you may be able to tell by this list of nearby places and there were no felt reports from this possibly much more sparsley populated region, there:

5.8 - 91km NW of Lubuklinggau, Indonesia

This one came in closer to press time and a lot of the same places on the felt report, which I may publish otherwise since it was late Sunday, that won't really be complete until later, and not sure when I'll publish my next edition with all the New Years coming!!! So here's the banner from it:

3.9 - 18km NNW of Anchorage, Alaska
2018-12-31 03:28:48 (UTC) 19.8 km depth

That last report was at 383 and just upped a few when I refreshed it prior to posting this blog, so I'll keep an eye on it and big difference from the above one which appears to be from December 29, is Homer is on there and Chugiak has 36 and the above one Chugiak has 7 although 3.9 is a bigger earthquake so you might expect that and they are just a few miles apart, there.

And just a little bit of shaking around Los Angeles, too:

0.9 8km N of La Verne, CA 2018-12-30 22:03
1.7 7km NNE of San Dimas, CA 2018-12-30 16:30
2.3 7km NNE of San Dimas, CA 2018-12-30 16:29

My final note for the year says to post a reminder that there was a 5 Magnitude Earthquake that struck Malibu on January 1, 1979 that I had heard shook during that years "Rose Bowl Game" so I checked and found this:

5.2 - 13km S of Malibu Beach, CA
1979-01-01 23:14, 33.917°N 118.687°W 13.3 km depth

Nearby Places
8 Miles N. of Malibu Beach, California
9.2 Miles NW of Malibu, California, USA
13.3 Miles ENE of Santa Monica, California
14 Miles ENE of Venice, California, USA

Here's a link to description of that earthquake and final score of that Rose Bowl Game which wasn't interrupted@ http://scedc.caltech.edu/significant/malibu1979.html AND an actual link to the USGS Report which seems to still exist there@ https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/ci12228815/executive CLICK on Regional Info for location info. . . and of course all this because there remains one alert for all around the Pacific that runs till at least Mid-January and there HAVE been quite a number of "January Earthquakes" which I'll discuss in detail in my next edition.

And there you have it!!! That's a wrap on another Great Year for your old friend "The EQ Guy" and all my work with earthquakes such as the EQ Blog you're reading!!! Thank-You All for following and here's looking forward to another Great Year: New Years 2019!!! Happy New Years, Everybody!!!!!
