First off, I want everybody reading to be aware that this "EQ Blog" is simply the daily ramblings of a former auto-mechanic, who went on to join the Carpenters Union and worked in Los Angeles where I was in a lot of earthquakes. Beyond my apprenticeship with the carpenters and a degree in acting and S.A.G. Card. . . I am not formally educated in fields such as Geology, Seismology, Meteorology, and etc. Disclaimer: You are reading a blog that I write in spare time while not working as actor in TV and Motion Pictures among other occupations I do. I do not represent any of the scientific organizations of which I frequently write about, nor am I member of any of the fraternities associated with those fields. While I have a lot of friends who are educated in those fields and are members of those organizations, I remain a member only of SAG-AFTRA and consider myself through a lot of studies, to be "Amateur Seismologist" at best. Basically just writing out my daily opinions here on how the world of Plate Tectonics is or might be working.
As to why they keep changing, and changing, and changing the apparent magnitude of this Major Aftershock at Chile. . . I can only guess what that's all about. I'm thinking a person somewhere might be tasked with the job of calculating, and re-calculating all of the pertinent information into an ever more accurate and hopefully at some point, exact magnitude and in so doing feels it necessary to CHANGE the numbers in the headline so that it is changing kind of often. In the course of such a huge emergency sort of thing it can be a problem trying to figure out if we are talking about the same earthquake or a new or possibly even a different one and at one point an error was made somewhere along the way, but owing to not always knowing if it was still one, two, or three different earthquakes. . . it takes a lot more time to go back through and double-check the "Time Stamp" to figure out if it was the same earthquake or a different one all together. Up to this point as I am writing I can NOW tell you so far it has simply been numbers being changed around, however, in the event someone actually needed to know or potentially calculate the inherent danger, it could have actually been somewhat hazardous getting constantly changing magnitudes. Of course at some point, I suppose you might also say that UPDATED numbers may also be of some help to others. In reality OCCASIONALLY there actually ARE 3 earthquakes of 7 Magnitude and somebody might need to know exactly WHERE all of the 3 different epicenters were. . . for obvious reasons.
As I am writing this the news seems to be saying there have not been any injuries reported, but the latest magnitude was 7.6 still being just 10 miles from Iquique, I don't see how it could not be a disaster but that is just my own personal calculation based in part on the fact that a search revealed that the Sichuan, China earthquake was also a 7.8 and it seems to me the damage was far more distant from the epicenter than 10 miles. (Again they changed the magnitude so that throws at least ME off, there, too)
It occurred to me that there may NOT have been an actual earthquake that coincided with the plane crash in the Indian Ocean!!! However thinking about it there WILL still be a "Hiccup" on all of the seismographs in that region coinciding with the crash. These hiccups would need to be located by time reference after the last contact or radar reading of the plane AND once found could easily locate almost the EXACT LOCATION of the missing airplane!!! A check would probably reveal there are even one or two seismometers out there in the immediate area where they are searching and it is possible they might also search seismograph readings. Where seismometer is the device that picks up readings, and seismograph is the device that shows those readings such as the drum with the pencil marking the readings. Then the hiccup can be located on all the other seismographs in the region and one can triangulate almost the exact location!!! They would then need to agree on it. . . better than they seem to be agreeing on the magnitude of Wednesday nights aftershock!!!
Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley could be next in line for huge shaker, too!!! Also continue to watch New Zealand and Mozambique!!! Exact towns in Mozambique are Nambunga, Masasi, Kitangari, and Nachingwea. This line also travels up into Lake Tanganyika, Tanzania, Congo, Algeria, and Morocco and then up towards Azores and Iceland. . . . . but it also crosses directly across New York, Chicago, and like Tijuana, Mexico along the way. 7.8 Aftershock Strikes 10 Miles From Iquique, Chile!!!!! WATCH Los Angeles!!!!!
7.8 Richters just struck and most recent update as I am writing this looks like the epicenter was on land, as far as tsunami would then be concerned there should not be the same chances of tsunami stuff, but information has been changing in the last few minutes since first reported.
7.8 will result in an extreme amount of damage to Iquique, Chile so be prepared now to hear very bad reports to come from that region and I'm very sorry for folks in that region!!! Measured just 10 miles to that town from current epicenter as marked on USGS map and at 7.8 Richters. . . . . 10 miles is far too close to that big of earthquake!!!
This is too much earthquake energy happening at too fast of a rate for me to keep up with this EQ Blog, so starting now be watching Los Angeles, because just sayin' this earthquake energy was originallly headed on a straight line for San Fernando Valley and New Zealand. . . . . Chile was just to the east of the line but very shaky so ALL of this Major Earthquake energy could be headed for L.A., but could hit any time or not at all you know! My Official Prediction will still take hours and another day or two to prepare until then think about earthquake preperations! Mostly gas in all the cars, and batteries in all the flashlights and maybe a radio and couple extra bottles of water.

— The EQ Alert Guy (@EQAlert) April 1, 2014In my search for a way to show my latest "Tweets" on my EQ Twitter Page, I discovered the embeded tweet and so here is the most recent Twitter message that I sent on Tuesday just prior to leaving for work and as you can see. . . we were ALREADY watching for that big "MegaThruster-Tsunami" and it looks like it is safe to say we got it!!!
Having now checked all of the other possible sources of this big of earthquake energy and it looks rather convincingly like the landfall of Cat-4 Tropical Cyclone Hellen at Madagascar as of this writing. Not to mention the fact that I had already been tracking this earthquake and the potential movement of the Pacific Tectonic Plate as well. This would have to be the same earthquake energy or one money as they like to say referring to the fact that there are not two games coincidentally being played at the same time, here, rather it more or less has to be all the same earthquake energy.
In which case we will now have to continue watching for A LOT more earthquakes!!! For today let us be aware that this alert, if this is the one here, was originally intended for New Zealand and Los Angeles! The actual line that I tracked across the Pacific ran directly through Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley like as if Northridge was directly inline for this 8.2 Richters Earthquake which a lot of you reading this already know would not be a good thing. BUT, just sayin' it is the one that was heading for the L.A. Region and could still be heading up in that region. There is probably a good scientific explanation for why that VERY SHAKY Offshore Chile place actually got this one, which as I always do, posted Chile because this location HAD already been moving, and moving, and moving. . . and so you might just figure they could get this ultimate one like they did!!!
You might have also seen where I posted a special EQ Alert for Mozambique, and they will continue to be very likely to get some shaking there along that shore of Africa where all of this earthquake energy started. If and when that region of Africa shakes, THEN we will know for sure that was where it all started! There are some other areas around the Mozambique Region where they could also get some shaking, I suppose that could include the Lake Tanganyika Region and probably most all of the Southern Africa Continent.
Just In: All tsunami warnings and watches in the Pacific canceled, including for Chile and Peru, @cnn now reporting!
Back to the continuing watch for next Major Earthquake: This is very serious, now, we will all need to be watching to see where it will shake next because we know somebody will be SHAKING!!!!! Thank-You for Reading!!! EQ Guy

There Has Been an 8.0 Richters Earthquake at Chile!!!!!
This earthquake seems to have been upgraded to an 8.2 and while a small like 6 foot tsunami does seem to have struck the region, there is not a lot of damage and no deaths being reported. The USGS version can be viewed @ http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/usc000nzvd#summary

Landfalls At Madagascar ALWAYS Shake Mozambique, First!!! WATCH Mozambique Region for 7.5 Richters or More!!!
This is a quick note to say that the landfall just hours ago, yesterday actually, of Tropical Cyclone Hellen at Madagascar was heading in a South East direction, but it is very important for me to say right now that while it was heading away from the Continent of Africa, the very first signs that this will be a huge earthquake will begin to show up immediately along the shores of Africa. It is almost a sure thing as I write this at 1:10pm Central Time, that MOZAMBIQUE will be the first place along this brand new line of Major Earthquake Energy to SHAKE!!! Say 7.5 Richters. It is even probable it will only take a few hours to begin to notice this. There is a major fault line that travels like inland along the shore of the ocean there that routinely shakes whenever there is such a huge landfall as happened yesterday at Madagascar! While the line will continue on and direcly intersects the North Island of New Zealand, that will be at least a few days before it will be noticed there.
Until then watch for HUGE Earthquakes to begin shaking along that tectonic plate boundary out there in the Indian Ocean and around the south of Australia on its way heading up towards New Zealand, Pacific Islands, and directly crossing Los Angeles much later in the month of April!!! No Joke!!! Watch and Be Prepared Mozambique Region!!!!! EQ Guy

New Moon Alert Ends, BUT Next Megathruster/Tsunami Event Could Be Coming!!!!!
There were many, many earthquakes to talk about during the March 2014 New Moon Window!!! You might want to include the 5.1 Richters La Habra/Los Angeles 2014 Earthquake in there albeit 14 hours and 39 minutes before the actual New Moon Window started and while I have always said a few hours before. . . not sure on 14 hours being included. Although our main question would be what effect the New Moon might have had on La Habra. The earthquake itself currently with NO Wikipedia Page to itself @ https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=2014_La_Habra_Earthquake&action=edit&redlink=1 IF you could help on that project, I'm thinking there should be enough talk to afford that earthquake it's own page possibly in perpetuity, not sure. Of course Yellowstone, and Oklahoma also shook notably inside that New Moon Window enough to convince myself of some pull caused by the shifting phases of the moon! Window ended at 11:48am PDT on Monday and it now looks like final good shaker at Fullerton was 2:30pm Monday. Hopefully the end of the New Moon Window will be the end of that subject. . . although I notice Westwood was shaking since then, so?

4.8 Yellowstone National Park, and a Big 4.5 Strikes Oklahoma!!! ALL During New Moon and It Aint Over, Yet!!!
All of that happened so far during the March 2014 New Moon Window and it isn't over yet either! You could even say it actually all started with the big 5.1 La Habra/Los Angeles Earthquake on Friday although that one actually struck about 12 hours before I normally begin counting. . . of course you have also heard me say we might start watching immediately and not wait for the exact moments to come since they tend to shake just an hour or two before and after sometimes.
A lot of people have been enjoying my latest EQ V-Log and this weeks has the best of felt reports from 5.1 La Habra Earthquake! So, one final chance to click arrow and enjoy!!!

Almost do not want to know what the upcoming full moon could bring! Saw a HUGE Tropical Cyclone bearing down on Madagascar that is about to make landfall at any moment if T.C. Hellen hasn't already! Much more about that big windstorm that is going to change the game one more time, yet, later!!!
AND finally just one more time that I hope to let the general public know in the future, Lucy, that there does seem to be an at least somewhat higher correlation with the days immediately before and after the full and new moon having earthquakes! For whatever reason the councils and OES probably have more serious things to worry about than 4 days a month of constantly preparing for earthquakes, but I do believe folks DO want to know the same as pretty much all of you reading this, of course already do!!! Someday everybody should know there was at least a somewhat higher chance of an earthquake on the night of the recent La Habra Earthquake!!! Thank-You for Reading!!! EQ Guy

Here's EQ V-Log--La Habra/Los Angeles Earthquake 2014!!!!! New Moon Window Through Monday!!!

5.4 Strikes Los Angeles!!! LOTS of Aftershocks!!! New Moon Window Starts NOW!!!
We've had an awful record of bad earthquakes happening during the most recent Full and New Moon Windows and there was just a 5.4 that struck very near Brea Canyon out in the East Los Angeles neighborhood around La Habra.
This earthquake has now been followed by many, many aftershocks and was actually preceded by a 3.6 Richters Earthquake.
I intended to run a long list of earthquakes that had struck around the border towns in the last hours and day or so, many with the name Calpatria and they number upwards of a hundred of them as of tonight. There was also the Westwood Earthquake and another Westwood Earthquake. . . . . but this time it was those two different Westwood, California towns with one being Los Angeles and the other being Susanville. More about that later.
I will have updated felt reports and the big list of all the aftershocks later and possibly into Saturday.
Keep watching for significant earthquakes to strike now throughout the March 2014 New Moon Window which will run all the way up to and including Monday!!! Not a lot of major earthquake energy running around out there on the loose on this occasion, but always be prepared and always be watching because there will always be the possiblility that a lot of earthquake energy COULD be released from somewhere it has been building up. It has been a long day of discovering a lot of new stuff that I didn't know about that Major Earthquake in Alaska in 1964!!! If anybody was wondering, it would appear the direction the plate was primarily swinging was North and South, although any east and west swinging that day would have made that plate more banging against the wall than swinging! I suppose that there could become an historical fact someday all by itself!
Of course somewhere along the way there was bound to be a story about the fact that Seattle is due for a similar big earthquake as big as Great Alaska one of 50 Years Ago!!! If anybody was wondering, it would appear the direction the plate was primarily swinging was North and South, although any east and west swinging that day would have made that plate more banging against the wall than swinging! I suppose that there could become an historical fact someday all by itself!
Of course somewhere along the way there was bound to be a story about the fact that Seattle is due for a similar big earthquake as big as Great Alaska one of 50 Years Ago!!! 50 Year Anniversary of Great Alaska Earthquake of 1964!!!!! New Moon Window Starts on Saturday!!!
As usual I was going through all the latest earthquakes in an effort to locate the ones that would be todays headlines in this here EQ Blog, when I suddenly discovered it had been March 27 and is the Anniversary of the Great Alaska Earthquake that was also called "Good Friday Earthquake" and suddenly the 5.4 Richters Earthquake that just struck up at the Northern Indian Ocean Tectonic Plate was no longer significant enough for todays headline. However I must mention that earthquake in the Indian Ocean combined with the landfall of Tropical Cyclone Gillian at Christmas Island does indicate there will likely be still more medium sized earthquakes coming for somebody at some point in the future.
As far as the past, it is now 50 years since that huge 9.2 Richters Earthquake struck Alaska at 5:32pm Alaska Time in the afternoon of March 27, 1964. I was riding my tricycle along and heading from the kitchen into the living room right at the exact moment of a fairly huge shaker right here in Wisconsin at one point in my young life and while it could possibly have been this earthquake, there was also one or two Illinois Earthquakes back around that time and so I can not exactly recall if it was the month of March, or if I would have been riding a tricycle at the age of 3 Years and 7 Months which would have been my exact age on the day I felt everything shaking and looked up to see a decorative plate on the wall above me swinging. I suppose it was obvious to me what it was that day, but sorry I did not keep accurate track of what day that was and so I can not say for sure it was this earthquake, but in any event that is my story. UPDATE: Found the Felt Report from this earthquake and there are reports from Indianapolis and Lincoln, Nebraska!!! I can do a little bit of research and try to find a felt report from that earthquake although it will be later in the week I get that and report it here. Here is a link to Wikipedia where you can just simply read all the major facts related to that earthquake, but I can tell you I just read through it and it appears from reading this story that a big part of the cause of that earthquake was the fact that Alaska had just become a state in 1959 and there was a lot of building right there in that immediate area as a result. One thing I learned early on about pictures of the biggest earthquakes was that there was always a lot of brand new construction right there in the immediate area and then the ground tends to really settle a lot, and shake!!! There is a similar effect whenever a brand new reservoir is filled with water such as did happen right at our own Lake Mead back at the time the Hoover Dam was completed and they then filled it with water. There was a lot of earthquakes there as well as the recent filling of the Three Gorges Dam and Reservoir up in China and others. The general term used is man made earthquakes and includes nuclear tests, deep wells, and today is more and more coming to include fracking, but construction on fault lines might also be a cause although not entirely as of this writing, anyways.
The swarm at Mt. Hood seems to be continuing although I do not have an updated list today, I will have that later, but Chile seems to have let up as I have not been getting them on my phone since I last wrote about all of them. Could have just been your basic Richter-Guttenberg rule of aftershocks and quit.
NEW MOON Alert will begin on Saturday Morning and there has also been somewhat of a winter storm on our East Coast with upwards of a foot of new snow and winds reported over 100mph!!! 6.5 Richters Strikes Fiji--Update: No Tsunami!!! (PTWC) ALSO: Full Report on Oso, Washington Landslide, Too
I want to start out todays EQ Blog by sending my sincere sympathy to all of those involved in the very serious landslide and rescue currently taking place in the Oso, Washington Region! Here's hoping the very best for all involved and sorry for those losses being reported!
A quick search did reveal that there have been many earthquakes up in that shaky region in the last few days including Gold Bar, Washington on March 24, 2.3 Princeton, Canada on March 25, and Port Townsend, Washington on March 21, 2014 at 3:30am Pacific Time. Also very sorry to hear that the authorities are uncertain of the number of people missing and so I checked the map of the neighborhood and the nearby highway:
AND it actually appears to be mostly houses along a road which is across the river from the primary landslide area, the GREEN ARROW in the pic, and there do not appear to be any homes that had been built up along the actual landslide area. The actual landslide area appears to be strictly the side of a big mountain and I do not know what portion of it may be totally involved, but got at least one pic that might help answer that:
WITH My Thanks to person who posted that pic and hope all is well with you and yours on Post Road, there! Could be one of the mountians involved there in the background across the bridge actually more to the left of the end of bridge there, but in any event it is the general look of the highlands involved in the landslide and some portion of that big hill in the distance loosened up and cascaded down towards the river. It was also mentioned that they had been at around 200 percent of their regular rainfall recently. Lots of rain is always a contributing factor in earthquakes as well as loosening of the soil and measures are more and more often now taken to mitigate such hazards. Again, sorry it must be at such a loss!!!
The search for the missing plane in the Indian Ocean was finally halted as a result of the now remnants of Tropical Cyclone Gillian that I have been reporting on all week and hopefully that will pass entirely and the search may continue after the storm with now gale force winds passes directly over Perth, Australia.

There is also a town in Idaho named Chalice where they have also now been getting a lot of earthquakes even as big as 3 Richters and so we should continue to watch, although primary sources of major earthquake energy wane more everyday, we are still only at Day 25 following the landfall of the California Vortex at King City, so we should continue to watch King City, Lone Pine, Las Vegas, Oklahoma, and the Caribbean because we need to follow that potential earthquake energy for a while yet and we know there are still a lot of places shaking so there will remain the chance of something big to shake somewhere, yet, probably into April and especially starting Saturday and through this weekend with the New Moon on Sunday!!! And the 50th Anniversary of the Great Alaska, "Good Friday Earthquake" of 9.2 Richters on March 27, 1964. . . although there are no signs of another 9.2 coming!!! Thank-You Again for Reading! EQ Guy

LOTS More Shaking at Mt. Hood!!! Mondays Equals 11 Richters!!! More at Chile, Too!!! WATCH For a Major Earthquake!!!
I have been right about these in the past, and will probably be right about this one, too! And notice the New Moon will be coming up on Sunday along with the 50th Anniversary of the Great Alaska Earthquake on Friday this week! It has also been somewhat of a problem that they're getting all the earthquakes in Chile, too! Although up to this point it has mostly been a problem with the fact that they are getting so many that my phone is ringing all the time with them and running up my bill for all the text messages that I am getting now about every day! This led me to start wondering if it is not a more than unusual amount, and that is why I want to say today that it MIGHT be a highly unusual amount and that this could all ultimately be leading to a very big and possibly bad Major Earthquake situation! However, there is not a real high and notable amount of major earthquake exactly being expected anywhere right at the moment other than the anniversary of the Great Alaska Earthquake which by itself does not exactly generate a lot of new earthquake energy if you know what I mean! That said, I decided to also run the list from that one specific location in Chile where they are getting all these keeping in mind there are other earthquakes also happening in other parts of Chile since you will notice these are all the same location if you check the exact location:

Therefore, for whatever reason they have basically been shaking in Chile ever since the day of the full moon and now the New Moon is coming up on Sunday!!! Be Watching Chile, Be watching Mt. Hood, Oregon and California, too, because it is starting to look like there might be a grand finale coming up to all this shaking that is going on!
