How close to the Mammoth Lakes area are these earthquakes in Oregon? Are there any volcanic areas in or near the areas where the Oregon quakes are hitting? I am learning about Geology and this is very interesting to me.
Freedancer, That region is riddled with volcanoes and some are actually even considered to be ACTIVE!!! That is a big neighborhood region so all these earthquakes are more or less relatively close to each other and seem to interact with each other, too, although the specific instances of their interaction is not likely to yet be fully cataloged and therefore only theoretical that each specific tiny movement is connected to the rest as they go. Time/Life has a fairly good series of books about earthquakes, etc. Also, University Libraries have every single book about earthquakes, too, especially interesting to me when I was learning was how the ground shifted in the biggest earthquakes! You had one of the biggest ones of all time in Idaho in 1983 @ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1983_Borah_Peak_earthquake . . . and a lady named Lawanna Knox was standing AT the epicenter and personally witnessed the ground upheave like 8 feet!!! Thank-You for your question and Good-Luck with your Geology studies!!!
