UPDATE: Cyclone Pam with windspeeds of 165mph and gusts of 200mph is currently striking at Vanautu and specifically reports say the capital there of Port Villa! Damage reports are sure to come in from that region very soon and Major Earthquakes will surely follow. This huge windstorm is also forecast to continue onto New Zealand and some other regions there. On the one hand all of this severe winter weather in Italy could affect Mt. Vesuvius or the neighborhood of the historic Messina Earthquake! Otherwise anything could happen and it could possibly strike nearby Greece or Hungary, too! Yes, as our snow all across the US does appear to be leaving us by way of the rivers, we must pay attention to that 100 plus inches of snow at Italy that fell in 18 hours as reported right here in yesterdays EQ Blog. Here's the details that I located that could be relevant with this new EQ Alert: Italy!!!
The year was 1908 and the day was December 28 when Messina, Italy at the south of Italy was struck by this 7.1 Richters Earthquake that I'm talking about here! This was an Earthquake-Tsunami Event and the sum total of deaths involved was about 123,000 according to Wikipedia/1908 Messina Earthquake. The City of Messina was reportedly almost completely destroyed as well as at least one other city, Reggio Calabria.
Vesuvius Eruptions have famously taken place around 16,000; 8,000; and 3,000 years ago with one having taken place in 217BC. . . all prior to the most famous 79AD Eruption that buried the city of Pompeii. Now absent a thorough going over of all the facts about that volcano, it seems to me 79AD was the last big eruption and they consider Mt. Vesuvius to be DUE to Erupt!!! Enough said! With all this going on right now let us add that we might watch that huge volcano!!!
Finally there seem to be some brand new Tropical Cyclones in the region around Australia and New Zealand and while we might not have too much snow left to speak of with tomorrow talking about the 60's. . . these really dramatic looking huge windstorms listed at up to 140 for windspeeds will threaten to ring in a whole lot more earthquake energy but honestly until one really makes the headlines by making landfall somewhere and doing a lot of damage, until then we just wait and watch there! Down the road something could be happening, though and add New Zealand to Italy, Greece, and Hungary and you have some earthquakes coming! Albeit on the other side of the world! Be Watching for that, you know! As well as for all the snow to melt and all of our alerts for California and West Coast to melt away with it! Keep hoping. . . and keep melting, snow!!!
