This one I only had to type in "8.1 Macquarie Island" and very easily came up with the USGS Report saying December 24, 2004!!!!! Here is the link to USGS to see the results yourself: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eqinthenews/2004/ussjal/ THAT EARTHQUAKE led me to write and send out "Big EQ Alert" now famous for being just a day or two BEFORE The Great Sumatra Earthquake of 2004!!! And you seen it here!!! Will that movement at Macquarie Island lead to a similar event??? Note that the alert itself does run into early January.
As far as where the two epicenters are in relation to each other 5.5 yesterday and 8.1 2004 Macquarie Island, they appear to be west of Macquarie, and north along the fault line more towards New Zealand for the 2004 8.1 which must have seriously shook New Zealand. You could say close enough to being the same location, although the difference of several miles DOES indicate the result will probably not be the same. Still watch around Grand Nicobar, Banda Aceh, Phuket, and the rest of those shaky places around that tectonic plate. And continue to watch California because there probably still is a fair amount of earthquake energy out there in that region!
