I was just a little surprised today to see that a 2.0 struck up in the little out of the way region of New York State what looked very near Watkins Glen. . . and seen Watkins Glen State Park right there on the map just 10 miles to the south of this one the USGS located at 4 Miles North of a small town named Dundee, NY. Kind of unusual to have one strike up in that region, but I immediately reasoned the recent landfall of Tropical Storm Gabrielle at Puerto Rico on September 4 might have been about due to shake something up in that region and me, of course, always watching Richmond and Washington DC as most of you probably recall. Let us now still watch Richmond and Washington DC a while just as a precaution, but as I had been saying it should be small like that and no worries!
There was also a 1.6 recorded 1 mile East of Berkeley and it made me wonder if a person can feel a 1.6, or if 2.0 is the starting point where we have any movement other than just a small vibration under foot? OR is 2.0 and 2.5 the number where the USGS begins to record those felt reports? After now having done this enough years and focusing on that tiny fact. . . I want to say that with the increase from 2 to 3 you shake progressively more, and more and thus wind up reporting it on the USGS Felt Reports progressively more, and more, too, but apparently not at 1.6 and that is where I am at right now with the magnitude/felt report ratio.
Finally, as I wrote earlier this week September 11, 12, and 13 will be Day 31, 32, and 33 after the landfall at Philippines of Super Typhoon Utor at Cat-5 and I might still expect something major to shake with those there days being highly susseptible to major earthquakes and my phone has now chimed numerous times with shakers out in the Pacific Islands Regions and so it remains possible there is still significant earthquake energy out there that we should be watching our West Coast for. Also Central and South America since all we know here is that the Pacific Tectonic Plate is moving and due for a Major Shaker!!! Be Prepared! EQ Guy
